Hotel Mikołaj – Krakow tradition in a modern edition
Hotel History
Hotel Mikołaj is located on Mikołajska Street, one of the most beautiful and atmospheric streets in Krakow. It leads from Mały Rynek to the intersection with Westerplatte Street, where it then turns into Mikołaja Kopernika Street. The route of the Małopolska Way of St. James from Sandomierz to Tyniec runs through it. There are beautiful, restored tenement houses with characteristic Art Nouveau ornaments in the shape of chestnut and linden leaves.
It was marked out during the foundation of Krakow in 1257 and at that time it was an exit road from the city connected with the route leading towards Ruthenia. Its name comes from the Church of St. Nicholas located on this route. Initially, it was also called Rzeźnicza, which resulted from the proximity of the city’s slaughterhouses, located in the area of the Rzeźnicza Gate, the relics of which are preserved in the walls of the monastery in Gródek.
